End-tidal Co2

End-tidal CO2 (ETCO2) is the concentration or partial pressure of carbon dioxide measured at the end of exhalation, providing a noninvasive indicator of ventilation and respiratory status. During capnography, a sensor analyzes exhaled gas and displays the CO2 waveform and value, which reflect the balance among cellular metabolism, pulmonary blood flow, and alveolar ventilation. Clinicians use ETCO2 monitoring to assess airway patency, guide mechanical ventilation, confirm tracheal tube placement, and identify changes during anesthesia, sedation, or cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Trends in ETCO2 can reveal hypoventilation, airway obstruction, or altered circulation earlier than some other clinical signs.

Tidal Forces

2023

The origin of Earth's ocean tides has been a subject of continuous investigation for over 2000 years. However, the work of Newton is considered to be the beginning of the proper understanding of the phenomenon. Ocean tides are the result of gravitational tidal forces. These same tidal forces are present in any astronomical body; they are responsible for the internal heat that creates the volcanic activity on Io, one of Jupiter's moons, and the breakup of stars that get too close to black holes.

2014

Non-invasive imaging of the brain vasculature’s ability to dilate or constrict may allow a better understanding of cerebrovascular pathophysiology in various neurological diseases. The present report describes a reproducible and patient-comfortable protocol to perform vascular reactivity imaging in humans using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

This video describes how to perform CO2 measurement in intubated as well as spontaneously breathing patients. The main clinical indications refer to emergency situations: (1) verifying adequate positioning of an endotracheal tube; (2) achieving normocapnia in trauma patients; (3) monitoring ventilation in the case of procedural sedation.
