Vascular Diseases

Vascular diseases are disorders that affect blood vessels, disrupting circulation and potentially impairing the function of organs and tissues. They arise when vessels narrow, weaken, become inflamed, or develop abnormal clots, which can reduce blood flow, cause bleeding, or obstruct oxygen delivery. In clinical practice, conditions such as atherosclerosis, aneurysms, venous thrombosis, and peripheral artery disease are evaluated through medical history, physical examination, and vascular imaging. Understanding their mechanisms supports earlier diagnosis, risk assessment, and treatment strategies that help prevent complications such as stroke, ischemia, tissue damage, and organ failure.

Assessment of Vascular Function in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease

2014

The degree of vascular dysfunction and contributing physiological mechanisms can be assessed in patients with chronic kidney disease by measuring brachial artery flow-mediated dilation, aortic pulse-wave velocity, and vascular endothelial cell protein expression.

Orthotopic Aortic Transplantation in Mice for the Study of Vascular Disease

2012

We describe a technique in which a section of the abdominal aorta from a mouse is transplanted orthotopically to just below the renal arteries in an allogeneic or syngeneic recipient. This technique can be useful in studies in which transplantation of large arteries of uniform size is deemed advantageous.

Precision Ultrasound-guided Stem Cell Delivery for Vascular Repair in Aortic Diseases

This paper presents a protocol for the precise ultrasound-guided delivery of vascular stem cells to the aortic vessel wall. The technique effectively targets the vessel wall and promotes vascular repair in aortic aneurysms and dissections.

A Model of Reverse Vascular Remodeling in Pulmonary Hypertension Due to Left Heart Disease by Aortic Debanding in Rats

The present protocol describes a surgical procedure to remove ascending-aortic banding in a rat model of pulmonary hypertension due to left heart disease. This technique studies endogenous mechanisms of reverse remodeling in the pulmonary circulation and the right heart, thus informing strategies to reverse pulmonary hypertension and/or right ventricular dysfunction.

Calcification of Vascular Smooth Muscle Cells and Imaging of Aortic Calcification and Inflammation

Vascular calcification is an important predictor of and contributor to human cardiovascular disease. This protocol describes methods for inducing calcification of cultured primary vascular smooth muscle cells and for quantifying calcification and macrophage burden in animal aortas using near-infrared fluorescence imaging.
