Cellular Extensions

Cellular extensions are specialized projections from a cell’s surface that expand its ability to sense, attach, move, communicate, or interact with neighboring cells. They form when the plasma membrane is shaped by coordinated remodeling of the actin or microtubule cytoskeleton, producing structures such as filopodia, microvilli, cilia, and axons with distinct roles. In developmental biology, these extensions guide cell migration, establish tissue architecture, support cell polarity, and transmit signals that influence differentiation and morphogenesis. Studying their assembly and dynamics helps explain how cells organize into functional tissues and how disruptions in these structures can contribute to developmental abnormalities.

Proboscis extension response or PER is a taste behavior assay that has been used in flies as well as in honeybees. When the proboscis makes contact with an attractive substance, the fly extends its proboscis to consume the substance. Solutions of various sugars are very attractive to the fly.

Using a Macrophage Conditioned Medium to Promote Neuron Extensions

2025

This video demonstrates an assay for promoting the growth of neuron projections known as neurite outgrowth using the macrophage-conditioned medium. Co-culture neurons and macrophages with cAMP and harvest the macrophage-derived conditioned medium. Growing the neurons with the conditioned medium promotes neurite outgrowths. These outgrowths are fluorescently labeled and visualized using a fluorescence microscope.

Autotrophs and Heterotrophs Living organisms require a continuous input of energy to maintain cellular and organismal functions such as growth, repair, movement, defense, and reproduction. Cells can only use chemical energy to fuel their functions, therefore they need to harvest energy from chemical bonds of biomolecules, such as sugars and lipids. Autotrophic organisms, namely plants, algae, and photosynthetic and chemosynthetic bacteria, convert inorganic materials into such biomolecules by...

Quantifying Respiration using Microrespirometers ExpandNOTE: In this experiment, you will measure the rate of cellular respiration for germinating seeds by measuring the rate of exchange for oxygen. As oxygen is consumed to provide energy, germinating seeds release carbon dioxide. This carbon dioxide is absorbed by potassium carbonate and thus the overall gaseous pressure of the respirometer will be reduced. HYPOTHESES: The experimental hypothesis is that germinating seeds will show a greater...

Initiating Rapid Neurite Extension and Formation Functional Neuronal Connections

2025

This video demonstrates a technique for the rapid initiation and extension of a neuron and creation of new connections with a target neuron using a microfluidic device and micromanipulation. This could be used for therapies that aim to reconnect neuronal circuits after trauma or in neurodegenerative diseases.
