Ceramic Reinforcement

Ceramic reinforcement is the use of hard, stiff ceramic particles, whiskers, or fibers to improve the mechanical or thermal performance of a matrix material, especially in engineered composites. When dispersed through a metal, polymer, or ceramic matrix, these reinforcements transfer applied load, restrict deformation, and can increase stiffness, hardness, wear resistance, and temperature stability; performance depends on composition, size, distribution, and bonding at the interface. Engineering applications include lightweight structural components, cutting tools, protective coatings, and parts exposed to heat or abrasion. Understanding reinforcement architecture and interface quality helps researchers balance strength, durability, manufacturability, and cost.

Source: Sina Shahbazmohamadi and Peiman Shahbeigi-Roodposhti-Roodposhti, School of Engineering, University of Connecticut, Storrs, CT Bones are composites, made of a ceramic matrix and polymer fiber reinforcements. The ceramic contributes compressive strength, and the polymer provides tensile and flexural strength. By combining ceramic and polymer materials in different amounts, the body can create unique materials tailored for a specific application. As biomedical engineers, having the ability...

Positive Reinforcement Studies

Researchers study learning of a behavior through the use of operant conditioning. This type of learning involves associating the behavior with a consequence, which is a reward or punishment. If the consequence is a reward, it leads to reinforcement of the desired behavior. One type of reinforcement approach is positive reinforcement, where the behavior is rewarded with an artificial, natural, or social reinforcer. Studies using positive reinforcement as a tool can help tease out important...

Operant drug self-administration and conditioned place preference (CPP) procedures are expansively used in research to model various components of drug reinforcement, consumption, and addiction in humans. In this report, we combined traditional CPP and self-administration methods as a novel approach to studying drug reinforcement and addiction in rats.
