Cold Joint Prevention

Cold joint prevention is the set of construction practices used to maintain continuity between successive placements of concrete and avoid weak interfaces caused by delays in pouring. When fresh concrete is placed before the underlying layer has set, vibration and compaction can integrate the layers; if setting has begun, cleaning, roughening, moistening, and applying an approved bonding treatment can improve adhesion before the next placement. Effective planning of delivery, placement sequence, workability, temperature control, and consolidation reduces the risk of cold joints. These measures help preserve structural integrity, load transfer, durability, and resistance to cracking in concrete elements.

Source: Robert M. Rioux & Suprita Jharimune, Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA Working with extreme temperatures, both high and low, is an integral part of many laboratory operations. For many, mentioning a laboratory instantly evokes the mental picture of a Bunsen burner. Bunsen burners and hot plates are used extensively in small and large operations in research laboratories and industries, thus making it necessary for all users to be aware of their safe handling...

Here, we present a protocol to establish a long-term liver cold storage and transplantation model in Daurian ground squirrel (DGS), which has been technically challenging in standard rodent models.

Responses to Heat and Cold Stress

Every organism has an optimum temperature range within which healthy growth and physiological functioning can occur. At the ends of this range, there will be a minimum and maximum temperature that interrupt biological processes. When the environmental dynamics fall out of the optimal limit for a given species, changes in metabolism and functioning occur – and this is defined as stress. Plants respond to stress by initiating changes in gene expression - leading to adjustments in plant...

Here we demonstrate a novel assay to study cold nociception in Drosophila larvae. This assay utilizes a custom-built Peltier probe capable of applying a focal noxious cold stimulus and results in quantifiable cold-specific behaviors. This technique will allow further cellular and molecular dissection of cold nociception.

Structural Joints: Fibrous Joints

2025

Fibrous joints are a type of joint where the bones are connected by fibrous connective tissue. These joints provide stability and minimal to no movement between the articulating bones. There are three types of fibrous joints. Suture All the bones of the skull, except for the mandible, are joined to each other by a fibrous joint called a suture. The fibrous connective tissue found at a suture strongly unites the adjacent skull bones and thus helps to protect the brain and form the face. In...
