Critical Chloride Content

Critical chloride content is the threshold concentration of chloride ions in reinforced concrete that can initiate corrosion of embedded steel, making it a key parameter in durability engineering. Chlorides enter concrete through pores and cracks, migrate toward reinforcement, and can disrupt the steel’s passive oxide film when their local concentration exceeds a condition-dependent threshold; moisture and oxygen then support electrochemical corrosion. Engineers use critical chloride content to assess existing structures, estimate time to corrosion initiation, set exposure limits, and design concrete mixtures and protective systems. Because the threshold varies with cement composition, alkalinity, steel condition, and environmental exposure, reliable evaluation supports service-life prediction and maintenance planning.

We propose a method to measure a parameter that is highly relevant for corrosion assessments or predictions of reinforced concrete structures, with the main advantage of permitting testing of samples from engineering structures. This ensures real conditions at the steel-concrete interface, which are crucial to avoid artifacts of laboratory-made samples.
