Electrostatic Screening

Electrostatic screening is the reduction or cancellation of an electric field in a region by rearranging mobile or induced charges, a principle that matters for controlling unwanted electrical interactions. In a conductor at electrostatic equilibrium, free charges move across its surface until the internal electric field becomes zero, while a closed conductive enclosure can shield its contents from external static fields; in ionic media, surrounding ions can similarly screen charged objects. Engineers apply electrostatic screening in Faraday cages, cable shields, sensors, and electronic enclosures to reduce interference, protect components, and improve measurement reliability. Understanding charge distribution and boundary conditions also guides grounding and electromagnetic-compatibility design.

Electrostatic Boundary Conditions

2025

Consider an external electric field propagating through a homogeneous medium. When the electric field crosses the surface boundary of the medium, it undergoes a discontinuity. The electric field can be resolved into normal and tangential components. The amount by which the field changes at any boundary is given by the difference between the field components above and below the surface boundary. The surface integral of an electric field is given by Gauss's law in integral form and is related to...

Electrostatic Method to Remove Particulate Organic Matter from Soil

Removing recently deposited and incompletely decomposed plant material from soil samples reduces the influence of temporary seasonal inputs on soil organic carbon measurements. Attraction to an electrostatically charged surface can be used to quickly remove a substantial amount of particulate organic matter.

Electrostatic Boundary Conditions in Dielectrics

2023

When an electric field passes from one homogeneous medium to another, crossing the boundary between the two mediums imparts a discontinuity in the electric field. This results in electrostatic boundary conditions that depend on the type of mediums the field propagates through. Consider a case where both the mediums across a boundary are two different dielectric materials. Recall that the electric field and electric displacement are proportional and related through the material's permittivity.

High-throughput Screening for Chemical Modulators of Post-transcriptionally Regulated Genes

Here we describe a cell-based reporter gene assay as a valuable tool to screen chemical libraries for compounds modulating post-transcriptional control mechanisms exerted through 3’ UTR.

Genetic Screens

Genetic screens are critical tools for defining gene function and understanding gene interactions. Screens typically involve mutating genes and then assessing the affected organisms for phenotypes of interest. The process can be “forward”, where mutations are generated randomly to identify unknown genes responsible for the phenotypes, or it can be “reverse”, where specific genes are targeted for mutation to observe what phenotypes are produced. Here, JoVE reviews various types of genetic...
