Layer Contact Mechanism

A layer contact mechanism describes how adjacent layers in an engineered structure meet and transmit forces, heat, or electrical signals across their interface. Its behavior depends on contact area, surface roughness, pressure, friction, adhesion, and, in bonded systems, the formation of chemical or metallurgical connections; these factors determine whether layers slide, separate, deform, or act as a unified assembly. Engineers use layer contact mechanisms to analyze laminated materials, coatings, composite structures, seals, and additively manufactured components. Understanding interfacial behavior supports safer designs, improves load transfer and durability, and helps identify failure modes such as delamination, wear, and thermal damage.

We describe the approaches for the device fabrication and electrical characterization of molybdenum diselenide (MoSe2) layer semiconductor nanostructures with different thicknesses. In addition, the fabrication of ohmic contacts for MoSe2-layer nanocrystals by the focused-ion beam deposition method using platinum (Pt) as a contact metal is described.

Layer Microdissection of Tricuspid Valve Leaflets for Biaxial Mechanical Characterization and Microstructural Quantification

When a solid is dipped inside a liquid, the liquid surface becomes curved near the contact. For some solid–liquid interfaces, the liquid is pulled up along the solid, while for others, the liquid surface is convex or depressed near the solid surface. This phenomenon can be explained using the concept of cohesive and adhesive forces. The adhesive force is the molecular force between molecules of different materials, that is, between the molecules of the solid and the liquid. The cohesive force...

In this paper we describe the interfacial synthesis of conjugated microporous polymers (CMP) on sacrificial substrates, and the dissolution of the substrate for the preparation of freestanding CMP nanomembranes. In addition, we will describe how the fragile nanomembranes can be transferred to other substrates.

Larval Contact Assay: A Procedure to Evaluate Mosquito Larval Mortality following Direct Contact with Test Larvicidal Compound

2025

In this video, we describe the larval contact assay to evaluate the toxicity of the dopamine receptor antagonist amitriptyline on the third instar stage larvae of mosquitoes, known vectors of several human infectious diseases. Assessing the larval mortality upon incubation with different amitriptyline concentrations over different time intervals helps determine its lethal concentration 50.
