Nitrogen Etching Method

The nitrogen etching method is an engineering approach that uses nitrogen-containing environments to selectively remove or modify material surfaces, supporting precise fabrication and surface treatment. In plasma-based implementations, an applied electric field generates reactive nitrogen species and energetic ions that interact with exposed bonds, while gas composition, pressure, power, and treatment time control the resulting etch rate, selectivity, and surface chemistry. The method can help pattern micro- and nanoscale structures, prepare surfaces for subsequent processing, and tune material properties without relying solely on conventional chemical etchants. Its effectiveness depends on the substrate, mask material, reactor conditions, and desired degree of anisotropy.

The Nitrogen Cycle

2019

Nitrogen atoms, present in all proteins and DNA, are recycled between abiotic and biotic components of the ecosystem. However, the primary form of nitrogen on Earth is nitrogen gas, which cannot be used by most animals and plants. Thus, nitrogen gas must first be converted into a usable form by nitrogen-fixing bacteria before it can be cycled through other living organisms. The use of nitrogen-containing fertilizers and animal waste products in human agriculture has greatly influenced the...

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Elemental Analysis is a method used to determine elemental composition of a material. In environmental samples such as soils, scientists are particularly interested in the amounts of two ecologically important elements, nitrogen and carbon. Elemental analysis by the flash combustion technique works by oxidizing the sample with a catalyst through combustion in a high-temperature chamber. The products of combustion are...

Overview of Nitrogen Metabolism

2023

Nitrogen is a very important element for life because it is a major constituent of proteins and nucleic acids. It is a macronutrient, and in nature, it is recycled from organic compounds and stored in the form of ammonia, ammonium ions, nitrate, nitrite, or nitrogen gas by many metabolic processes. Many of these metabolic processes are carried out only by prokaryotes. The largest pool of nitrogen available in the terrestrial ecosystem is gaseous nitrogen (N2) from the air, but this nitrogen...
