Optic Nerve Segmentation

Optic nerve segmentation is a computer vision technique that identifies and outlines the optic nerve head or optic nerve structures in ophthalmic images, enabling consistent anatomical measurement. The process typically uses image preprocessing to reduce noise and enhance contrast, followed by boundary detection, feature extraction, or machine learning models that classify pixels or regions as nerve tissue. In engineering, segmented images support automated analysis of fundus photographs and optical coherence tomography scans, including measurements relevant to optic nerve health and glaucoma assessment. Reliable segmentation can improve image-based diagnosis, reduce manual analysis, and provide standardized data for clinical research and intelligent ophthalmic systems.

Mechanically Injuring Drosophila Larvae Segmental Nerves to Induce Neurodegeneration

2025

The video demonstrates inducing neurodegeneration in Drosophila larva segmental nerves via mechanical injury. The ventral cuticle of anesthetized larvae is pinched using forceps to cause injury to the segmental nerves. The injured larvae are maintained with food, allowing the injury to cause degeneration of the motor neurons in the nerves, causing disruption of their neuromuscular junctions (NMJs).

Drosophila melanogaster larvae provide an ideal model system to investigate the mechanisms of axonal transport within larval segmental nerves. Using this procedure, 3rd instar larvae carrying various mutations can be compared to wild type larvae.

Inducing Local Demyelination in the Optic Nerve Using Lysolecithin

Direct injection into the rat optic nerve is useful for regenerative research. We demonstrate a minimally-invasive technique for direct injection into a rat optic nerve that does not involve opening the skull. Using this method, surgical complications are minimized and recovery is more rapid.

In Vitro Recording of Mesenteric Afferent Nerve Activity in Mouse Jejunal and Colonic Segments

Mesenteric afferent nerves convey information from the gastrointestinal tract towards the brain regarding normal homeostasis as well as pathophysiology. Gastrointestinal afferent nerve activity can be assessed by mounting isolated intestinal segments with attached afferent nerves into an organ bath, isolating the nerve, and assessing basal as well as stimulated activity.
