Suspension Systems

Suspension systems are mechanical assemblies that support a vehicle or machine while controlling relative motion between its body and the surface or structure beneath it, improving stability, comfort, and component life. They combine elastic elements, such as coil springs, leaf springs, or air springs, with dampers that convert motion into heat through fluid resistance; linkages and joints guide movement and maintain alignment under changing loads. Engineers tune stiffness, damping, geometry, and ride height to balance handling, vibration isolation, load capacity, and durability in automobiles, motorcycles, rail vehicles, and specialized machinery.

The tail-suspension test is validated as an experimental procedure to assess antidepressant efficacy of drug treatments in mice. Mice are suspended by their tails for six minutes and escape-related behaviors are assessed. We describe procedures used in conducting the tail suspension test.

Infecting Flies with Bacterial Suspension Using a Nanoinjector

This video demonstrates the nano-injection of bacterial suspension into the fly body cavity, resulting in bacterial multiplication and infection. The fly's immune response clears some bacteria, while others escape immune clearance and survive within the host causing an infection.

ECM Suspension Preparation: A Technique to Obtain Homogenous Suspension from Tissue-derived Extracellular Matrix

Children at play often make suspensions such as mixtures of mud and water, flour and water, or a suspension of solid pigments in water known as tempera paint. These suspensions are heterogeneous mixtures composed of relatively large particles visible to the naked eye or seen with a magnifying glass. They are cloudy, and the suspended particles settle out after mixing. The suspended particles in a suspension settle out after some time of mixing. The separation of particles from a suspension is...

The Use of Chemostats in Microbial Systems Biology

Cell growth rate is a regulated process and a primary determinant of cell physiology. Continuous culturing using chemostats enables extrinsic control of cell growth rate by nutrient limitation facilitating the study of molecular networks that control cell growth and how those networks evolve to optimize cell growth.
