Transcatheter Aortic Valve

A transcatheter aortic valve is a collapsible prosthetic heart valve engineered for catheter-based replacement of a diseased aortic valve, offering an alternative to open surgical repair. Mounted on an expandable frame, it is compressed within a delivery catheter, advanced through a blood vessel to the heart, and deployed inside the native valve; the prosthesis displaces or anchors within the calcified leaflets and regulates one-way blood flow. Engineering considerations include biocompatible materials, radial force, sealing, fatigue resistance, and precise positioning. These devices are used primarily to treat severe aortic stenosis, improving cardiac output and expanding less-invasive treatment options for patients with elevated surgical risk.

This article presents the design and implementation of an automatic surgery module based on augmented reality (AR)- based 3D reconstruction. The system enables remote surgery by allowing surgeons to inspect reconstructed features and replicate surgical hand movements as if they were performing the surgery in close proximity.

Upper-extremity Approach for Secondary Access in Transfemoral Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation

An upper-extremity approach for secondary access during transfemoral transcatheter aortic valve implantation is associated with fewer secondary access site-related bleeding complications and reduces time to mobilization in patients requiring extended pacing. This protocol aims to provide an extensive overview of the upper-extremity approach and guide operators in adopting this methodology.

Full-root Aortic Valve Replacement by Stentless Aortic Xenografts in Patients with Small Aortic Roots

Full-root aortic valve replacement by stentless aortic xenograft is a viable option in patients with small aortic roots. We describe, a technique for the full-root implantation of stentless aortic xenografts, with emphasis on the management of the proximal suture line and coronary anastomoses, and discuss its limitations and alternative options.

This protocol describes the isolation, culture, and calcification of rat-derived valve interstitial cells, a highly physiological in vitro model of calcific aortic valve disease (CAVD). Exploitation of this rat model facilitates CAVD research in exploring the cell and molecular mechanisms that underlie this complex pathological process.

Isolation of Mouse Valve Interstitial Cells: An Enzymatic Method to Isolate and Culture VICs from Mouse Aortic Valve
