Animal Navigation

Animal navigation is the set of sensory and cognitive processes animals use to determine their position, choose a direction, and reach resources, mates, shelters, or seasonal destinations. It works by integrating environmental cues such as visual landmarks, odors, sound, polarized light, celestial patterns, and Earth’s magnetic field with internal mechanisms including path integration, which updates position from movement over time. In environmental research, studying navigation reveals how animals respond to habitat structure, weather, climate change, and human-made disturbances. These insights support wildlife conservation, migration research, and predictions of how changing landscapes may affect movement, survival, and ecological interactions.

Children who have complex communication needs can benefit from the use of a speech-generating device (SGD). Cognitive skills were identified as having an impact on the ability to navigate between levels of SGDs. This protocol describes the steps needed for Speech-language Pathologists to assess cognitive skills and navigational abilities.

Dynamic navigation systems (DNS) provide real-time visualization and guidance to the operator during endodontic access cavities preparation. The planning of the procedure requires three-dimensional imaging utilizing cone beam computed tomography and surface scans. After the export of the planning data to the DNS, access cavities can be prepared with minimal invasion.
