Glass Bead Matrix

A glass bead matrix is a structured assembly of glass beads that creates a stable, permeable solid medium for separating, supporting, or interacting with materials in a sample. Its performance depends on bead size, packing, surface properties, and the interconnected spaces between beads, which regulate fluid flow, particle retention, and contact with dissolved or suspended substances. In environmental research, glass bead matrices can support sample preparation, filtration, and controlled contact between contaminants, microorganisms, and treatment materials. Their chemically resistant composition and tunable physical structure make them useful for studying transport, adsorption, and separation processes under defined laboratory conditions.

The Looking Glass Self

2025

The concept of the looking-glass self describes how an individual's self-concept is shaped by their perception of how others see them. This psychological theory, first introduced by sociologist Charles Horton Cooley in 1902, posits that self-identity emerges in a social context and is influenced by the judgments—real or imagined—of others.Research suggests that individuals frequently overestimate how positively others perceive them. This is particularly evident in physical self-perception,...

Source: Bucher, T., et al. Methodologies for Studying B. subtilis Biofilms as a Model for Characterizing Small Molecule Biofilm Inhibitors. J. Vis. Exp. (2016).This video demonstrates how biofilm matrix integrity influences bacterial resistance to ethanol by comparing colony-forming units in untreated and inhibitor-disrupted biofilms. Reduced CFUs in inhibitor-treated samples demonstrate that the extracellular matrix is essential for protecting biofilm-embedded cells from antimicrobial stress.

Bead Sprouting Assay for Early-Stage Angiogenesis Assessment: An In Vitro Bead-Based Model to Study Endothelial Sprouting in the Presence of Pericytes
