Lignocellulose Extraction

Lignocellulose extraction is the separation and recovery of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin from plant biomass, an important step in converting renewable materials into useful products. The process disrupts the plant cell wall through mechanical, chemical, thermal, or biological treatments that break interactions among these polymers and improve access to the cellulose-rich structure. Extracted fractions can support production of biofuels, biochemicals, paper materials, and biodegradable products while reducing reliance on fossil resources and promoting biomass valorization. In environmental research, efficient extraction also helps assess agricultural and forestry residues, optimize waste conversion, and develop more sustainable biorefinery processes.

Source: Laboratory of Dr. Jay Deiner — City University of New York Extraction is a crucial step in most chemical analyses. It entails removing the analyte from its sample matrix and passing it into the phase required for spectroscopic or chromatographic identification and quantification. When the sample is a solid and the required phase for analysis is a liquid, the process is called solid-liquid extraction. A simple and broadly applicable form of solid-liquid extraction entails combining the...

OrganoCat is a method for the pretreatment and fractionation of lignocellulose under mild conditions into lignin, fermentable sugars, and cellulose pulp. In a biogenic, biphasic solvent system of water and 2-methyltetrahydrofuran with 2,5-furancarboxylic acid as catalyst, the OrganoCat products are separated in situ for straightforward product recovery.
