Beech Bark Disease

Beech bark disease is a forest health disorder in which an introduced scale insect and pathogenic fungi damage beech trees, altering woodland structure and biodiversity. The beech scale insect, Cryptococcus fagisuga, feeds on bark and creates wounds that allow Neonectria fungi to invade; fungal growth disrupts the cambium, impairs nutrient transport, and can girdle branches or trunks. Infected trees may develop cankers, crown decline, and mortality, while surviving beeches can show resistance or tolerance. Environmental researchers monitor disease spread, assess impacts on wildlife habitat and nutrient cycling, and evaluate management strategies that conserve resistant trees and reduce ecosystem disruption.

Beech bark disease is initiated by feeding activities of the beech scale insect that create fungal entry points in the bark. Trees that are resistant to the scale insect are also disease resistant. Here we present the protocol we have developed to screen individual beech trees for beech scale resistance.

Here, we present a protocol to synthesize the zinc oxide (ZnO) nanoparticles using the polyisoprene-rich aqueous extract obtained from Eucommia ulmoides tree bark. The wound-healing potential exhibited by the synthesized ZnO nanoparticles on human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) was evaluated using scratch assay, a simple, cost-effective, and efficient method.

An Overview of Genetics and Disease

2023

Many human diseases are associated with mutations or variations in genetic sequences. Some of these genetic variants are heritable, passed down from generation to generation, while others arise sporadically during an organism’s life and cause diseases such as cancer. Researchers are trying to identify and characterize these genetic alterations in the hopes of improving diagnosis and therapeutic options for patients. In this video, we will examine the history of genetic disease research, and...

Parasite Induced Genetically Driven Autoimmune Chagas Heart Disease in the Chicken Model

The inoculation of Trypanosoma cruzi in fertile eggs prior to incubation renders the parasite kDNA minicircle integration in embryo cells genome. Crossbreeding reveals the vertical transfer of the mutations to progeny. The kDNA integrates into coding regions at several chromosomes and the chickens die with an inflammatory autoimmune heart disease.
