Liquid Sample Analysis

Liquid sample analysis comprises methods for characterizing the physical, chemical, and biological properties of water and other liquid materials, supporting environmental monitoring and assessment. Samples are collected under controlled conditions, preserved to limit changes, prepared to remove or concentrate constituents, and examined with analytical measurements such as spectroscopy, chromatography, or electrochemical tests that relate instrument signals to analyte concentrations. These analyses can reveal nutrients, pollutants, dissolved metals, and other indicators of contamination, helping researchers evaluate water quality, trace pollutant sources, assess ecosystem conditions, and determine whether treatment or remediation is effective.

Source: Kerry M. Dooley and Michael G. Benton, Department of Chemical Engineering, Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, LA Liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) is a separation technique used instead of distillation when either: (a) the relative volatilities of the compounds to be separated are very similar; (b) one or more of the mixture components are temperature sensitive even near ambient conditions; (c) the distillation would require a very low pressure or a very high distillate/feed...

Carbon and Nitrogen Analysis of Environmental Samples

2023

Source: Laboratories of Margaret Workman and Kimberly Frye - Depaul University Elemental Analysis is a method used to determine elemental composition of a material. In environmental samples such as soils, scientists are particularly interested in the amounts of two ecologically important elements, nitrogen and carbon. Elemental analysis by the flash combustion technique works by oxidizing the sample with a catalyst through combustion in a high-temperature chamber. The products of combustion are...

2021

The aqueous humor is a high-yield liquid biopsy for retinoblastoma, intraocular cancer that cannot be biopsied in vivo due to the risk of extraocular spread. Herein, a method for safely extracting aqueous humor via clear corneal paracentesis and steps for genomic analysis to identify prognostic biomarkers are presented.
