Occupational Air Sampling

Occupational air sampling is the systematic collection and measurement of airborne contaminants in a workplace to characterize worker exposure and assess environmental health risks. Sampling devices draw a measured volume of air through collection media, such as filters, sorbent tubes, or direct-reading instruments, allowing contaminants to be identified or quantified over a defined task, shift, or location. Results can be compared with applicable exposure limits to evaluate controls, support hazard assessments, and guide improvements in ventilation, personal protective equipment, or work practices. In environmental and occupational research, the method helps characterize exposure patterns and informs monitoring programs, regulatory decisions, and prevention strategies.

2018

Determining the fungal diversity within an environment is a method utilized in occupational health studies to identify health hazards. This protocol describes DNA extraction from occupational air samples for amplification and sequencing of fungal ITS regions. This approach detects many fungal species that can be overlooked by traditional assessment methods.

Air-sampled Filter Analysis for Endotoxins and DNA Content

Position a human participant’s head within the head coil of a functional magnetic resonance imaging, or fMRI, system.Employ vascular space occupancy or VASO, a technique to measure changes in cerebral blood volume, or CBV, the blood volume within the brain.Begin by applying an inversion recovery pulse to suppress signals from blood, allowing only signals from the surrounding tissue within the region to be detected.Next, use MRI-compatible earbuds to deliver auditory stimuli. The stimuli reach...

Methods to Investigate the Regulatory Role of Small RNAs and Ribosomal Occupancy of Plasmodium falciparum

2015

Human microRNAs translocate from host erythrocytes to Plasmodium falciparum parasites. Here, the techniques used to transfect synthetic microRNAs into host erythrocytes and isolate all RNAs from P. falciparum are described. In addition, this paper will detail a method of polysome isolation in P. falciparum to determine the ribosomal occupancy and translational potential of parasite transcripts.

Quantification and Whole Genome Characterization of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in Wastewater and Air Samples

This protocol aims to quantify SARS-CoV-2 RNA in wastewater and air samples to be used for wastewater-based epidemiology studies and to assess the exposure risk to SARS-CoV-2 in indoor and outdoor aerosols. This protocol also describes a tiled amplicon long-template sequencing approach for SARS-CoV-2 whole genome characterization.
