Bacterial Survival Assay

A bacterial survival assay is a laboratory method for measuring how well bacteria remain viable under defined environmental, antimicrobial, or host-associated conditions. In a typical assay, bacterial cultures are exposed to a treatment such as immune cells, serum, antibiotics, or nutrient limitation, then surviving organisms are quantified by dilution and growth on agar to determine colony-forming units. These measurements distinguish bacterial killing from growth inhibition and reveal how microbial traits and immune mechanisms influence infection outcomes. In immunology and infection research, survival assays help evaluate host defense, compare pathogen virulence, test antimicrobial therapies, and identify factors that support persistence during infection.
