Growth Inhibition Measurement

Growth inhibition measurement is the quantitative assessment of how strongly a treatment, immune factor, or environmental condition reduces the proliferation of cells or microorganisms. In infection research, investigators compare treated and untreated cultures by tracking changes in turbidity, viable cell counts, colony formation, or other indicators of population growth over time. These measurements can reveal antimicrobial activity, characterize dose-dependent responses, and help distinguish slowed growth from complete killing. In immunology, the approach supports evaluation of antibodies, cytokines, immune cells, and host-derived factors that restrict pathogens, providing evidence for mechanisms of host defense and informing therapeutic or diagnostic development.

The deferred growth inhibition assay can be used to assess the competition effect by one bacterial isolate on another. Inhibition is quantified by measuring the zone of clearing around the inhibitor-producing isolate, or qualitatively assessed by determining the visible extent of inhibition.

An Assay to Measure Influenza Neuraminidase Inhibition Antibody Titers

2025

This video demonstrates an assay measuring influenza neuraminidase (NA) inhibiting antibody titers in a serum sample. A serum sample containing antibodies against NA is added to a fetuin-coated microwell plate. Upon adding the virus, the antibodies prevent viral NA from cleaving fetuin and exposing its galactose moiety. A peroxidase-conjugated lectin is then added, which binds to the exposed galactose. The NA-inhibiting antibody titer is determined using a colorimetric test, where a peroxidase...
