Mosquito Hemolymph

Mosquito hemolymph is the insect body fluid that circulates through an open system, bathing tissues and transporting nutrients, hormones, and immune factors. During infection, circulating hemocytes recognize microbial patterns and act with soluble defenses, including antimicrobial peptides, complement-like proteins, and enzymes that promote melanization, a reaction that encapsulates or darkens invading organisms. Studying these responses helps explain how mosquitoes limit bacteria, fungi, and parasites such as Plasmodium, while also revealing how pathogens evade or manipulate vector immunity. Hemolymph analysis supports research on mosquito physiology, host-pathogen interactions, and strategies that could reduce pathogen transmission by targeting vector competence.

Cuticle Disruption: A Method to Collect Hemolymph from Drosophila Larvae

2023

The Drosophila hemolymph serves as both blood and interstitial fluid, circulating throughout the body during the larva and adult stages. This video describes a protocol to collect larval hemolymph in order to quantify the circulating cells.

Mosquito Feeding Assay: A Method to Evaluate Test Compound Effects on Mortality and Fecundity of Adult Female Mosquitoes

2025

This video demonstrates a blood-feeding assay to evaluate the mortality and fecundity of test compounds with novel modes of action on female mosquitoes. This technique helps in screening new classes of insecticides to kill the resistant population of mosquitoes and control disease spread.

Insulin Injection and Hemolymph Extraction to Measure Insulin Sensitivity in Adult Drosophila melanogaster

Conserved insulin signaling pathways found in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster make this organism a potential tool for modeling metabolic disorders including type II diabetes. To this end, it is critical to establish physiological assays to effectively measure systemic insulin action in peripheral glucose disposal in the adult fly.
