Urine Sample Collection

Urine sample collection is the controlled process of obtaining urine for laboratory analysis, with careful technique needed to preserve clinically relevant cells, microorganisms, proteins, and chemical signals while limiting contamination. In a midstream clean-catch collection, the patient cleans the urethral area, begins voiding, collects urine in a sterile container without interrupting flow, and promptly seals and transports the specimen under appropriate conditions. Proper collection supports urinalysis, bacterial culture, antimicrobial susceptibility testing, and detection of immune or inflammatory markers, helping researchers and clinicians investigate urinary tract infections, host responses, and disease-associated changes.

Filtration and Urine Formation

The function of the kidneys is to filter, reabsorb, secrete, and excrete. Every day the kidneys filter nearly 180 liters of blood, initially removing water and solutes but ultimately returning nearly all filtrates into circulation with the help of osmoregulatory hormones. This process removes wastes and toxins but is also crucial to maintain water and electrolyte levels. Most of these functions are performed by the tiny but numerous nephrons contained within the kidneys. Blood enters the renal...

Assays for Qualitative and Quantitative Assessment of Mouse Urine Glucose Concentrations

Samuel1, Kavaljit Chhabra11University of Rochester Medical Center. This video demonstrates a procedure for collecting mouse urine and assessing its glucose levels. To evaluate the glucose level, immerse a test strip coated with enzymes and a chromogenic dye into the sample, initiating a color change that indicates the glucose levels. For quantifying urine glucose levels, introduce a urine sample to a multiwell plate with escalating glucose concentrations,...

A urine culture and sensitivity test is a diagnostic procedure used to identify urinary tract bacterial infections and determine the most effective antibiotics for treatment. This test is generally preferred when a patient shows manifestations of a urinary tract infection, such as frequent or painful urination, cloudy or foul-smelling urine, or lower abdominal pain.Purpose of the TestThe primary goals of a urine culture and sensitivity test are to:Determine the specific bacteria causing the...
