Ameroid Constrictor

An ameroid constrictor is a surgically implanted device used to gradually close abnormal vascular connections, most commonly congenital portosystemic shunts in veterinary medicine. It consists of a hygroscopic casein insert enclosed by a metal ring; after implantation, the casein absorbs tissue fluid, swells, and progressively compresses the vessel rather than occluding it immediately. This controlled narrowing gives the liver and portal circulation time to adapt while reducing abnormal blood flow and associated metabolic complications. Ameroid constrictors therefore provide a valuable approach for treating selected animals with portosystemic shunts and for studying gradual vascular occlusion in surgical practice.

The purpose of this protocol is to demonstrate the placement of a delayed constricting device (an ameroid constrictor) around a coronary artery in a swine model. This device creates an ischemic area of the heart that is useful for studying new diagnostic imaging techniques and new methods of treatment.

Surgical induction of hindlimb ischemia in the mouse is useful to examine angiogenesis, however this is compromised in certain inbred mouse strains that display marked ischemia-induced tissue necrosis. Methods are described to induce subacute limb ischemia using ameroid constrictors to circumvent this problem through the induction of gradual arterial occlusion.
