Axillary Approach

The axillary approach is a clinical access route through the armpit that enables healthcare professionals to reach structures of the shoulder, upper limb, and surrounding neurovascular region while limiting more visible incisions. Depending on the procedure, clinicians use anatomical landmarks to enter the axillary space and identify the axillary artery, vein, brachial plexus, lymph nodes, or adjacent tissues while protecting nerves and vessels. This approach supports regional anesthesia, vascular and orthopedic procedures, and selected surgical interventions involving the breast or axilla. Understanding the anatomy and tissue planes helps improve procedural precision, reduce complications, and guide patient-specific treatment planning.
