Cardiac Gated Imaging

Cardiac gated imaging is a technique that synchronizes image acquisition with the heart’s electrical or mechanical cycle, reducing motion-related blurring and improving visualization of cardiac structures and function. Typically, an electrocardiogram identifies specific points in each heartbeat, allowing imaging data to be collected or reconstructed during selected phases such as diastole or systole. Used with modalities including computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, nuclear imaging, and ultrasound, cardiac gating supports assessment of ventricular motion, blood flow, coronary anatomy, and myocardial performance. It is valuable for diagnosing cardiovascular disease, planning interventions, and monitoring treatment while improving the accuracy of quantitative measurements.

Source: Frederick W. Damen and Craig J. Goergen, Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana In this video, high field, small-bore magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) with physiological monitoring is demonstrated to acquire gated cine loops of the murine cardiovascular system. This procedure provides a basis for assessing left-ventricular function, visualizing vascular networks, and quantifying motion of organs due to respiration. Comparable small animal...

The sensitivity gain inherent to ultrahigh field magnetic resonance holds promise for high spatial resolution imaging of the heart. Here, we describe a protocol customized for functional cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) at 7 Tesla using an advanced multi-channel radio-frequency coil, magnetic field shimming and a triggering concept.

Semi-Automatic Graphical Tool for Measuring Coronary Artery Spatially Weighted Calcium Score from Gated Cardiac Computed Tomography Images

This video demonstrates the use of a novel graphical tool for measuring the spatially weighted calcium score (SWCS), an alternative to the Agatston score, for quantifying coronary artery calcification. The graphical tool computes SWCS based on image data from gated cardiac computed tomography and user-defined paths of the coronary arteries.
