Digital Pain

Digital pain refers to the use of digital technologies to assess, monitor, and manage physical pain, extending clinical care beyond the clinic. In medicine, smartphone apps, web platforms, telehealth, and wearable sensors collect patient-reported symptoms and activity, sleep, or other health data; algorithms can identify patterns and deliver tailored education, cognitive behavioral strategies, or exercise guidance. These tools support pain diaries, remote follow-up, self-management, and clinician decision-making for acute and chronic conditions, while enabling more continuous measurement of treatment response. Their value depends on usable design, data quality, privacy, and integration with evidence-based care.

Diffuse noxious inhibitory control, temporal summation and wound hyperalgesia testing are demonstrated in the obstetric patient. These tests evaluate inhibitory and excitatory mechanisms of pain processing and are here utilized to evaluate endogenous analgesia at different time-points during pregnancy and the peripartum period to help reveal individual s risk for persistent pain.

All animal procedures described here must be conducted in accordance with institutional animal ethics guidelines and approved by IACUC. All procedures must follow the principles of the 3Rs—Replacement, Reduction, and Refinement—and must be performed by trained personnel. Monitoring Animals for Signs of Pain and Distress Recognizing early signs of pain is essential for ethical animal research. Animals are routinely monitored using behavioral, physical, and physiological parameters that reflect...

Urinary Bladder Distention Evoked Visceromotor Responses as a Model for Bladder Pain in Mice

Approximately 3-8 million people in the United States suffer from interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS), a debilitating condition characterized in part by pelvic pain. In order to study nervous system contributions to the condition, a physiological model of urinary bladder pain is used in mice and rats.

Current pain scales used to quantify pain severity, such as visual analog scales, fail to capture the complexity of subjective pain experiences. Pain body diagrams are qualitative but may be more informative. The goal of this method is to extract quantitative metrics from pain body diagrams using novel pressure-hue transformation.
