Endoscopic Assessment

Endoscopic assessment is a minimally invasive medical examination that uses an endoscope to visualize internal body surfaces and cavities, helping clinicians evaluate anatomy and identify abnormalities. An endoscope combines a light source with an optical or video system and is introduced through a natural opening or a small incision, allowing real-time image collection and targeted tissue sampling when indicated. In medicine, endoscopic assessment supports diagnosis, disease monitoring, and evaluation of treatment response across organ systems. It can also guide therapeutic procedures, reduce the need for exploratory surgery, and provide direct evidence for clinical decision-making and research.

We describe methods for longitudinal monitoring of the efficacy of therapeutics for the treatment of colonic pathologies in mice using a rigid endoscope. This protocol can be readily used for the characterization of the therapeutic response of an individual tumor in live mice and also for monitoring potential disease relapse.

Source: Wang, L., et.al. Full-Endoscopic Isolation Zone Technique for the Treatment of Lumbar Disc Herniation. J. Vis. Exp.(2023)This video demonstrates a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure to treat lumbar disc herniation by removing the protruded nucleus pulposus and ruptured annulus fibrosus. The technique decompresses the affected nerve root, alleviates pain, and restores nerve function through targeted tissue resection and radiofrequency modulation.
