Facet Bone Removal

Facet bone removal is a spinal surgical technique in which part or all of a vertebral facet joint is excised to relieve pressure within the spinal canal or neural foramen. During the procedure, the surgeon removes selected bone that contributes to nerve compression, often while preserving or evaluating surrounding structures that support spinal stability. This approach may be used to treat symptoms associated with spinal stenosis, foraminal narrowing, or other conditions in which enlarged or damaged facet joints compress nerve roots. By improving space for neural tissues, facet bone removal can reduce pain, numbness, or weakness and may be combined with stabilization procedures when necessary.

Mass spectrometric characterization of neuropeptides provides sequence, quantitation, and localization information. This optimized workflow is not only useful for neuropeptide studies, but also other endogenous peptides. The protocols provided here describe sample preparation, MS acquisition, MS analysis, and database generation of neuropeptides using LC-ESI-MS, MALDI-MS spotting, and MALDI-MS imaging.
