Image-based Assessment

Image-based assessment is the systematic interpretation of medical images to characterize anatomy, detect abnormalities, and support clinical decisions. It works by acquiring images with modalities such as radiography, ultrasound, CT, MRI, or microscopy, then applying visual review and, when appropriate, image-processing methods such as segmentation, feature extraction, and classification to quantify relevant findings. In medicine, these assessments support screening, diagnosis, disease staging, treatment planning, and monitoring response over time. Standardized image analysis can improve consistency and reveal patterns that are difficult to evaluate by eye, while computational approaches support biomarker research, personalized care, and more reproducible clinical workflows.

Source: Ciraku, L., et. al. An Ex Vivo Brain Slice Model to Study and Target Breast Cancer Brain Metastatic Tumor Growth. J. Vis. Exp. (2021).This video demonstrates the imaging of luciferase-expressing tumor cells in an organotypic mouse brain slice. Luciferin is added to the medium, and the plate is placed inside the chamber of the in vivo imaging system. Parameters for image capture are adjusted, and the tumor's shape and size are defined. The bioluminescent signals emitted by the tumor...
