Intravesical Pessary

An intravesical pessary is a specialized device positioned within the urinary bladder, typically through the urethra, to provide mechanical support or influence bladder outlet function. Its effect depends on how the device contacts the bladder neck, urethral opening, or surrounding tissues, which can alter urine flow, continence, or pelvic support. This approach differs from the more familiar vaginal pessary and represents a specialized urological application of mechanical devices. Understanding its design, placement, retention, and potential complications is important for evaluating historical and contemporary approaches to urinary dysfunction, device-based treatment, and lower urinary tract care.

In this video, we describe the intravesical procedure of delivering cancer cells into the bladder of a mouse model. This procedure helps generate an orthotopic bladder tumor model that can be used to develop therapeutic strategies.

The Use of Cystometry in Small Rodents: A Study of Bladder Chemosensation

Cystometry is an efficient technique to measure bladder function of small animals in vivo. The bladder is continuously infused at rates controlled through an intravesical catheter, whereas the urethra is left free for micturition. This allows for repetitive filling and emptying of the bladder, while intravesical pressure and voided volume are recorded.
