Item Analysis

Item analysis is the systematic evaluation of individual questions in an assessment to determine how well they measure intended knowledge or skills. It examines indicators such as item difficulty, discrimination, and the performance of incorrect answer choices, often by comparing responses from higher- and lower-performing examinees. In medicine, educators use these findings to identify ambiguous or overly easy questions, refine distractors, and improve the validity and reliability of examinations. Repeated analysis can strengthen question banks, support fairer decisions about learner competence, and guide revisions to curricula when many students miss the same concept.
