Osteotomy Execution

Osteotomy execution is the surgical process of cutting and repositioning bone to correct deformity, restore alignment, or redistribute mechanical load. Surgeons plan the osteotomy according to the patient’s anatomy and desired correction, then create a controlled bone cut with instruments such as an oscillating saw or osteotome while protecting nearby soft tissues and vital structures. The bone is realigned and stabilized with fixation devices, allowing healing in the corrected position. In medicine, osteotomy supports treatment of angular limb deformities, joint malalignment, trauma-related abnormalities, and selected degenerative conditions, with outcomes depending on accurate planning, stable fixation, and appropriate postoperative care.

Executive Function and the Dimensional Change Card Sort Task

Source: Laboratories of Nicholaus Noles and Judith Danovitch—University of Louisville Infants are born with amazing cognitive resources at their disposal, but they don’t know how to use them effectively. In order to harness the power of their brains, humans must develop high-level cognitive processes that manage basic brain functions. These processes make up what psychologists refer to as executive function. Executive function is a key factor in many self-regulatory behaviors, including forming...

Adjustable Stiffness, External Fixator for the Rat Femur Osteotomy and Segmental Bone Defect Models

One constraint of preclinical research in the field of bone repair is the lack of experimental control over the local mechanical environment within a healing bone lesion. We report the design and use of an external fixator for bone repair with the ability to change fixator stiffness in vivo.

Protocol for Developing a Femur Osteotomy Model in Wistar Albino Rats

Here, we present a protocol to iatrogenically fracture the shaft of the femur of Wistar albino rats and follow up on the development of the callus. This femur osteotomy model can help researchers evaluate the process of fracture healing and to study how a drug could influence fracture healing.
