Neurological Function Assessment

Neurological function assessment is a structured clinical evaluation of the nervous system that identifies impairments in brain, spinal cord, peripheral nerves, and muscle function. Clinicians combine patient history with examinations of mental status, cranial nerves, motor strength, sensation, reflexes, coordination, and gait to compare observed responses with expected neural pathways. This systematic approach helps localize lesions, characterize functional deficits, and monitor changes over time. In medicine, neurological assessment supports diagnosis and triage for conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, seizures, neuropathy, and neurodegenerative disease, while also guiding treatment decisions and evaluating recovery.

In Parkinson's disease and movement disorders in general, sensitive and reliable behavioral assays are essential for testing novel potential therapeutics. Here, we describe a manageable battery of sensorimotor tests for mice that are sensitive to varying degrees of injury to the nigrostriatal system and useful for preclinical studies.

Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension and Assessment of Right Ventricular Function in the Piglet

Chronic Thromboembolic Pulmonary Hypertension (CTEPH) and Right Ventricular (RV) dysfunction were induced in piglets by progressive obstruction of the pulmonary arteries. Consequences were remarkably similar to those observed in CTEPH patients. This animal model would be a very useful tool for pathophysiology and therapeutic experiments on CTEPH and RV failure.
