Percutaneous Ablation

Percutaneous ablation is a minimally invasive medical procedure that destroys abnormal or diseased tissue through a needle or catheter inserted through the skin, reducing the need for open surgery. Depending on the target and treatment goal, image-guided probes deliver radiofrequency, microwave, cryothermal, or other energy that heats, freezes, or electrically disrupts cells and their function. It is used in interventional oncology to treat selected tumors and in cardiac electrophysiology to eliminate tissue responsible for abnormal rhythms. By targeting lesions precisely, percutaneous ablation can shorten recovery, reduce procedural trauma, and provide an alternative or complement to conventional surgery.

Percutaneous Cricothyrotomy

2023

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA A surgical airway procedure is indicated when other forms of endotracheal intubation have failed and ventilation is worsening or not possible. This is the feared "can't intubate, can't ventilate" scenario, and in the emergency setting, cricothyrotomy is the surgical procedure of choice. Cricothyrotomy is preferred over tracheotomy because of the lower risk of complications, the predictable anatomy...

A thermal tumor ablation procedure is described. The entire procedure is detailed, including pretreatment planning and imaging studies, anesthesia, adjuvant techniques to facilitate a percutaneous approach, imaging guidance of the ablation device to the tumor, thermal treatment, post-treatment care and follow-up.

Assessment of Neuromuscular Function Using Percutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation

We present a protocol to assess changes in neuromuscular function. Percutaneous electrical nerve stimulation is a non-invasive method that evokes muscular responses. Electrophysiological and mechanical properties of these responses permit the evaluation of neuromuscular function from brain to muscle (supra-spinal, spinal and peripheral levels).

Pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) with an ablation catheter is a curative treatment for atrial fibrillation (AF). Robotic catheter systems aim to improve catheter steerability. Here, a procedure with a new robotic catheter system is presented. The goal of the procedure is electrical block between pulmonary vein and left atrium.

Targeted Neuronal Ablation Using Two-Photon Microscopy in a Zebrafish Larava

Source: Muto, A., et al. Ablation of a Neuronal Population Using a Two-photon Laser and Its Assessment Using Calcium Imaging and Behavioral Recording in Zebrafish Larvae. J. Vis. Exp. (2018) In this video, a two-photon laser ablation procedure is demonstrated, enabling the selective destruction of fluorescent neurons in agarose-immobilized zebrafish larvae. High-resolution imaging before and after the procedure confirms efficient neuronal damage, as observed by the absence of fluorescence.
