Metabolic Activity

Metabolic activity is the set of chemical reactions that sustain life by converting nutrients into energy and cellular building blocks. In cells, enzymes regulate pathways that break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins or assemble molecules, while energy carriers such as ATP capture and distribute usable energy. In medicine, measurements of metabolic activity help assess tissue function, identify altered physiology, and monitor disease processes or treatment responses. These assessments support research and clinical applications involving metabolic and mitochondrial disorders, cancer biology, imaging, and personalized therapy.

2025

Take serial dilutions of a bacterial culture and add aliquots into calorimetric vials containing growth medium.Load the sealed vials into the multi-well plate of an isothermal microcalorimeter to measure metabolic heat production. The device is held at a constant temperature to ensure the detected heat originates solely from bacterial metabolism. As bacteria metabolize nutrients and proliferate, they release heat that sensors detect in real time.In parallel, incubate identical vials in an...

An Assay to Study the Impact of Photodynamic Treatment with a Photosensitizer on Macrophage Metabolic Activity

Sebolai11Department of Microbiology and Biochemistry, University of the Free State. The video demonstrates a technique for evaluating the influence of photodynamic treatment (PDT) with a photosensitizer on the metabolic activity of murine macrophages. The cells undergo treatment with the photosensitizer followed by exposure to UV light, initiating PDT. This process triggers the photosensitizer to generate reactive oxygen species...

Zebrafish represent a powerful vertebrate model that has been under-utilised for metabolic studies. Here we describe a rapid way to measure the in vivo metabolic profile of developing zebrafish that allows the comparison of different mitochondrial function parameters between genetically or pharmacologically manipulated embryos, thereby increasing the applicability of this organism.

What is Metabolism?

2019

Overview Metabolism represents all of the chemical activity in a cell, including reactions that build molecules (anabolism) and those that break molecules down (catabolism). Anabolic reactions require energy, whereas catabolic reactions provide it. Thus, metabolism describes how cells transform energy through a variety of chemical reactions, which are often made more efficient with the help of enzymes. Metabolism Is the Sum of All of the Chemical Reactions That Take Place in an Organism

An Introduction to Cell Metabolism

2023

In cells, critical molecules are either built by joining together individual units like amino acids or nucleotides, or broken down into smaller components. Respectively, the reactions responsible for this are referred to as anabolic and catabolic. These reactions require or produce energy typically in the form of a “high-energy” molecule called ATP. Together, these processes make up “Cell Metabolism,” and are hallmarks of healthy, living cells.JoVE’s introduction to cell metabolism briefly...
