Porcine Eye Model

The porcine eye model is an ex vivo or in vivo experimental system that uses pig eyes to study ocular anatomy, physiology, disease, and treatment, providing a practical bridge between laboratory research and clinical investigation. Its value comes from similarities between porcine and human ocular structures, while controlled preparation, imaging, tissue manipulation, or surgical procedures allow researchers to evaluate specific mechanisms and interventions. Porcine eyes support training in ophthalmic surgery, testing of instruments and drug-delivery approaches, and investigation of conditions affecting the cornea, lens, retina, or optic nerve. Findings can guide experimental design, improve procedural safety, and inform subsequent translational studies.
