Pulmonary Valve Transplantation

Pulmonary valve transplantation is a surgical procedure that replaces a damaged or absent pulmonary valve to restore one-way blood flow from the right ventricle to the pulmonary artery. The implanted valve, typically a donor or biological graft, opens during ventricular contraction and closes as the ventricle relaxes, reducing obstruction and backward blood flow through the pulmonary circulation. In medicine, this approach can treat severe pulmonary valve disease associated with congenital heart defects, previous cardiac surgery, or acquired damage. By improving right-ventricular outflow and supporting more efficient circulation, pulmonary valve transplantation can relieve symptoms, preserve cardiac function, and inform advances in tissue-engineered valve replacement.

In order to understand the cellular and molecular mechanisms underlying neotissue formation and stenosis development in tissue engineered heart valves, a murine model of heterotopic heart valve transplantation was developed. A pulmonary heart valve was transplanted to recipient using the heterotopic heart transplantation technique.
