Quantitative Mri

Quantitative MRI (qMRI) is an imaging approach that converts magnetic resonance signals into numerical maps of tissue properties, providing measurements beyond conventional anatomical images. It works by acquiring MRI data with controlled variations in sequence parameters, such as repetition or echo times, and fitting signal behavior to models of relaxation and other measurable characteristics. In medicine, these maps can help characterize tissue composition, assess disease-related changes, monitor treatment response, and support quantitative comparisons across patients or time points. By adding objective measurements to visual image interpretation, qMRI strengthens research and may improve the precision of diagnosis and clinical decision-making.

Small-animal positron emission tomography enables the assessment of the brain's two main energy substrates: glucose and ketones. In the present method, 11C-acetoacetate and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose are injected sequentially in each animal, and their uptake is measured quantitatively in specific brain regions determined from the magnetic resonance images.

Early detection of apoptosis may identify at-risk cell populations in a variety of diseases. Here we demonstrate a method to link an early apoptosis-detection protein (Annexin V) to a MRI-detectable iron oxide nanoparticle (SPIO). This method may be extended to other proteins of interest to generate MRI-detectable molecular imaging probes.
