Twist And Pull Method

The Twist and Pull Method is a technique for removing an attached tick from the skin, an important first-aid procedure that helps limit prolonged exposure to tick-borne pathogens. Using fine-tipped tweezers or a specialized removal tool, the user grasps the tick as close to the skin as possible, applies gentle rotational force, and then pulls steadily upward to remove the body and embedded mouthparts without crushing it. The method is used in clinical care, field medicine, and public health education, where prompt, controlled removal can reduce local skin injury and support accurate monitoring for infection or other symptoms.

2014

Magnetic tweezers, a powerful single-molecule manipulation technique, can be adapted for the direct measurements of the twist (using a configuration called freely-orbiting magnetic tweezers) and torque (using a configuration termed magnetic torque tweezers) in biological macromolecules. Guidelines for performing such measurements are given, including applications to the study of DNA and associated nucleo-protein filaments.

Co-Immunoprecipitation and Pull-Down Assays

2023

Co-immunoprecipitation (CoIP) and pull-down assays are closely related methods to identify stable protein-protein interactions. These methods are related to immunoprecipitation, a method for separating a target protein bound to an antibody from unbound proteins. In CoIP, an antibody-bound protein is itself bound to another protein that does not bind with the antibody, this is followed by a separation process that preserves the protein-protein complex. The difference in pull-down assays is that...

Angle of Twist: Problem Solving

2024

An electric motor applies a torque of 700 N·m to an aluminum shaft, triggering a stable rotation. Two pulleys, B and C, are subjected to torques of 300 N·m and 400 N·m, respectively. The modulus of rigidity is provided as 25 GPa. With the knowledge of the length and diameter of each segment, the twist angle between the two pulleys can be computed. First, a section cut is made between pulleys B and C, and the cut cross-section is analyzed using a free-body diagram. Given that the torque exerted...
