Ureteral Cuff Placement

Ureteral cuff placement is a reconstructive urologic technique that positions a cuff of ureteral or bladder tissue around the ureter to create a secure urinary connection. During the procedure, the ureter is mobilized while preserving its blood supply, aligned with the receiving tissue, and sutured to maintain a patent lumen without tension or leakage. The cuff supports accurate anastomosis and can help establish a submucosal pathway that limits urine reflux. This approach is used in ureteral reimplantation, urinary tract reconstruction, and selected transplantation procedures, where reliable drainage and prevention of obstruction, stricture, or leakage are essential outcomes.

The murine model of irreversible unilateral ureteric obstruction (UUO) is presented together with the model of reversible UUO in which the ureteric obstruction is relieved by anastomosis of the severed ureter into the bladder. These models enable the study of renal inflammation and scarring as well as tissue remodeling.

Source: Sharon Bord, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA When monitoring patients, it is important to obtain values that are accurate and reliable. Blood pressure monitoring is one of the essential vital signs, and for a majority of patients, measuring it utilizing non-invasive techniques provides accurate values. However, there are situations in which the blood pressure requires more exact, specific, and reliable measurements.

Mouse Model for Pancreas Transplantation Using a Modified Cuff Technique

2017

Among abdominal solid organ transplantation, pancreatic grafts are prone to develop severe ischemia reperfusion injury-associated graft damage, leading eventually to early graft loss. This protocol describes a model of murine pancreas transplantation using a non-suture cuff technique, ideally suited for analyzing these early, deleterious damages.

Source: Julianna Jung, MD, FACEP, Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, Maryland, USA For unstable patients requiring urgent administration of medications, fluids, or blood products, establishing vascular access quickly is essential. However, there are many factors that can complicate placement of a peripheral intravenous cannula (PIV), and it is extremely common for PIV attempts to fail. PIV placement may be technically challenging in small...
