Assessment Measures

Assessment measures are standardized tools and procedures used to quantify a person’s behavior, cognitive function, physiology, or neural activity, making complex neuroscience outcomes measurable and comparable. They work by translating observations into defined scores or signals through methods such as behavioral tasks, clinical rating scales, psychophysiological recordings, and neuroimaging, with interpretation guided by reliability, validity, and appropriate comparison groups. In neuroscience research and practice, these measures help characterize attention, memory, sensation, movement, and neurological impairment. They support diagnosis, track changes over time, evaluate treatment effects, and connect brain mechanisms with observable function.

We present a user-friendly, high-throughput operant system for the evaluation of pain behaviors in awake, conscious rodents. The Orofacial Pain Assessment Device (OPAD) can assess pain through a reward/conflict paradigm thus providing a more humane way of testing. This protocol will yield more clinically relevant and translational data from rodents.
