Astrocyte Progenitors

Astrocyte progenitors are precursor cells that generate astrocytes, glial cells that support neurons and neural circuits. During development, they arise from neural precursor populations and undergo lineage commitment, proliferation, migration, and differentiation, with extracellular signals and transcriptional programs guiding when and where they mature. Studying these cells helps explain astrocyte development, regional diversity, and the establishment of neuron–glia interactions in the nervous system. Their characterization also supports research on brain development, injury response, and disease modeling, where altered progenitor behavior may affect tissue repair and astrocyte function.

Astrocytes have been recognized to be versatile cells participating in fundamental biological processes that are essential for normal brain development and function, and central nervous system repair. Here we present a rapid procedure to obtain pure mouse astrocyte cultures to study the biology of this major class of central nervous system cells.

Isolating and Culturing Murine Cerebellar Granular Neuron Progenitors

This video demonstrates the isolation and cultivation of cerebellar neural progenitor cells from a mouse pup's cerebellum. Cerebellar granule neuron progenitors are isolated and purified through differential adhesion, effectively removing astrocytes. These cultured progenitors subsequently differentiate into cerebellar granule neurons.
