Biodegradable Scaffold

Biodegradable scaffolds are temporary three-dimensional biomaterial structures that support cell attachment, organization, and tissue repair before gradually breaking down and being cleared or replaced by newly formed tissue. Their performance depends on material composition, pore architecture, mechanical properties, and degradation rate, which together regulate how cells migrate, exchange nutrients, and remodel the scaffold under physiological conditions. In neuroscience, these structures can provide guidance and support for neural tissue engineering, including peripheral nerve repair and regeneration, while reducing the need for permanent implants. By coordinating structural support with biological remodeling, biodegradable scaffolds help researchers investigate strategies for restoring damaged neural connections and developing compatible regenerative therapies.
