Brain Activation Measures

Brain activation measures are experimental approaches used to quantify changes in neural activity and identify how the brain responds to stimuli, tasks, or internal states. They rely on physiological signals linked to neuronal function, including electrical activity recorded by electroencephalography, changes in blood oxygenation measured with functional magnetic resonance imaging, and metabolic or blood-flow changes assessed with positron emission tomography. In neuroscience, these measures help map brain regions and networks involved in perception, cognition, movement, and behavior, while revealing the timing and strength of responses. Their complementary strengths support research on healthy brain function, neurological disorders, and treatment effects.

Measuring Proteasome Activity in Different Subcellular Compartments of the Rat Brain

2025

This video demonstrates how to measure proteasome activity in different subcellular compartments of the lateral amygdala from fear-conditioned and control rat brains using a fluorogenic peptide assay. The proteasome cleaves the fluorogenic peptide substrate, releasing fluorescent molecules, which are quantified using a plate reader to assess proteasome activity in the nuclear and synaptic protein fractions. Increased nuclear activity suggests changes in gene expression, while reduced synaptic...

Measuring Neural Activity in a Mouse Brain Slice after Prolonged Incubation

2025

This video demonstrates a technique for measuring neuronal activity in mouse brain slices using calcium imaging and electrophysiological recordings. By perfusing the tissue with potassium ions and recording intracellular calcium changes through high-speed digital imaging, this method reveals real-time neuronal responses.

Measuring Pain-Evoked Brain Activity in Neonates Using a Flat-Tip Probe Coupled to EEG

2025

This video demonstrates a method for measuring pain-evoked brain activity in infants. It outlines the procedure for positioning electrodes on the infant's head and applying pain stimuli to the infant's hand using a flat-tip probe. The video also shows the EEG recording process to identify brain activity in response to the stimuli.

This report describes a method for measuring Drosophila larval activity using the TriKinetics Drosophila Activity Monitor. The device employs infrared beams to detect movements of up to 16 individual animals. Data can be analyzed to represent motion parameters including rates and the positions of the animals within the assay chambers.

Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy for Recording Brain Activity During Social Interactions

Source: Reindl, V., et al. Conducting Hyperscanning Experiments with Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy. J. Vis. Exp. (2019) This video demonstrates the use of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to measure brain activity during social interactions. Participants engage in a coordinated task that increases activity in the prefrontal cortex, a region critical for social behavior, while the system detects changes in light absorption due to blood oxygenation. By analyzing the synchrony...
