Micro-drive Array Implantation

Micro-drive array implantation is a neurosurgical technique for placing multiple movable electrodes in targeted brain regions, enabling stable neural recordings across days or weeks. During stereotaxic surgery, an electrode array is positioned through a cranial opening and secured to the skull; miniature screws or drive mechanisms then advance individual electrodes through tissue to sample changing depths while animals perform behavioral tasks. This approach supports chronic electrophysiology, allowing researchers to relate neuronal activity to movement, sensory processing, learning, and decision-making. It also improves access to distributed circuits and repeated measurements in the same subject, strengthening studies of circuit dynamics and reducing variability between animals.

The video demonstrates simultaneous electrophysiological recording from multiple brain regions in a rat using an integrative micro-drive array. Recording electrodes are placed in the olfactory bulb, reference electrodes in the frontal cortex, and micro-drive array electrodes in the hippocampus. The rat is allowed to forage freely, and simultaneous recording from all the implanted electrodes is recorded using the array.
