Electroencephalography Recording

Electroencephalography recording is a noninvasive method for measuring the brain’s electrical activity over time, making it valuable for studying neural function in neuroscience. Electrodes placed on the scalp detect voltage fluctuations produced mainly by synchronized postsynaptic activity in populations of cortical neurons, while amplifiers and signal-processing methods convert these small changes into interpretable waveforms and frequency patterns. Researchers use EEG to investigate cognition, sensory processing, sleep, and neurological disorders such as epilepsy. Its millisecond-scale temporal resolution supports analysis of rapid brain dynamics and complements imaging methods that provide greater spatial detail.
