Electrophysiological Protocols

Electrophysiological protocols are standardized procedures for recording and analyzing the electrical activity of neurons and other excitable cells, making them central to neuroscience research. These methods use electrodes to measure voltage changes or ionic currents across cell membranes, often under controlled stimulation and recording conditions, while protocol parameters determine how cellular responses are isolated and quantified. Applications include characterizing membrane properties, synaptic transmission, neuronal excitability, and circuit function in healthy and diseased systems. Consistent protocols improve reproducibility across experiments and support research on brain function, neurological disorders, and potential therapeutic strategies.

2017

Electrophysiological research is an important tool for identifying biomarkers of developmental disorders, including Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), but data collection in these populations remains challenging. This work presents a familiarization protocol to accompany research that includes electroencephalography (EEG) to improve the likelihood of collecting EEG data from children with ASD.
