Head-mounted Window

A head-mounted window is a surgically implanted optical interface that provides repeated access to the brain for in vivo neuroscience while allowing animals to move naturally. It typically consists of a transparent window secured to the skull above a target region; light passes through the window for fluorescence imaging, while emitted signals reveal neuronal activity, cellular structure, or blood vessel dynamics. By combining stable optical access with behavioral observation, head-mounted windows support longitudinal studies of neural circuits, brain plasticity, disease progression, and responses to experimental interventions. Their use can reduce variability between animals and link cellular events to behavior over time.
