Hippocampal Recording

Hippocampal recording is the measurement of electrical activity from neurons and circuits in the hippocampus, a brain region central to learning, memory, and spatial navigation. Researchers use electrodes or related electrophysiological sensors to detect changes in membrane voltage, action potentials, and local field potentials from individual cells or neuronal populations, either in living animals or isolated tissue. These recordings reveal how hippocampal circuits encode experiences, organize network activity, and change during learning. In neuroscience, the method supports research on memory formation, navigation, sleep-related activity, neurological disorders, and the cellular effects of drugs or other interventions.

Recording CA3-CA1 Synaptic Responses in a Rat Hippocampal Slice

2025

This video demonstrates a method to record CA3-CA1 synaptic responses in a rat hippocampal slice. It outlines the steps involved in placing the stimulating and recording electrodes on the hippocampal slice and measuring the field excitatory postsynaptic potential (fEPSP) to assess synaptic response strength.

Whole-cell Patch-clamp Recordings from Morphologically- and Neurochemically-identified Hippocampal Interneurons

Cortical networks are controlled by a small, but diverse set of inhibitory interneurons. Functional investigation of interneurons therefore requires targeted recording and rigorous identification. Described here is a combined approach involving whole-cell recordings from single or synaptically-coupled pairs of neurons with intracellular labeling, post-hoc morphological and immunocytochemical analysis.

Recording Neuronal Field Excitatory Postsynaptic Potentials in Acute Hippocampal Slices

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure for setting up a brain slice in a submersion chamber to record synaptic activity. The process involves securing the slice on lens paper, maintaining a continuous flow of artificial cerebrospinal fluid (aCSF) to ensure neuronal viability, and accurately positioning the stimulation and recording electrodes relative to a specific brain region of interest. This setup allows for precise monitoring of baseline synaptic activity and the effects of electrical...

Recording of Local Field Potential in Mouse Hippocampal-Entorhinal Cortex Slices

2025

The video demonstrates a procedure to record the local field potential (LFP) in mouse hippocampal-entorhinal cortex slices. Electrical stimulation is provided at the CA3 stratum radiatum of the hippocampus, which causes changes in the postsynaptic potential at the CA1 stratum pyramidale. The combined change in the membrane potential of CA1 neurons, termed the local field potential, is recorded.

Recording Neural Activity of Unfolded Hippocampal Tissue Using Penetrating Microelectrode Array

2025

This video demonstrates the procedure to set up a recording chamber with a penetrating microelectrode array (PMEA) to capture neural signals from an unfolded hippocampus. This method allows us to study the speed and direction of propagation of neural activity within the unfolded hippocampus in vitro.
