Inferior Alveolar Nerve

The inferior alveolar nerve is a sensory branch of the mandibular division of the trigeminal nerve that conveys sensation from the lower teeth, jaw, lower lip, and chin. It enters the mandibular foramen, travels within the mandibular canal, and gives rise to dental branches as well as the mental and incisive nerves; a mylohyoid branch typically separates before entry and contributes motor fibers to muscles of the floor of the mouth. In neuroscience and clinical anatomy, its organization provides a model for studying peripheral sensory pathways, trigeminal nerve function, regional anesthesia, dental pain, and nerve injury affecting sensation in the lower face.

We evaluated the effect of cervical sympathetic ganglion block on nerve repair using artificial nerve conduits. Male beagle dogs were each implanted with an artificial nerve across a 10-mm gap in the left inferior alveolar nerve; left cervical sympathetic ganglion was blocked by injecting 99.5% ethanol via lateral thoracotomy.

Lateral Canthotomy and Inferior Cantholysis

Source: James W Bonz, MD, Emergency Medicine, Yale School of Medicine, New Haven, Connecticut, USA Lateral canthotomy is a potentially eyesight-saving procedure when performed emergently for an orbital compartment syndrome. An orbital compartment syndrome results from a buildup of pressure behind the eye; as pressure mounts, both the optic nerve and its vascular supply are compressed, rapidly leading to nerve damage and blindness if the pressure is not quickly relieved. The medial and lateral...

This protocol presents a step-by-step instruction for harvesting the superficial inferior epigastric artery fascia (SIEF) flap and wrapping it around the reconstructed peroneal nerve defect in rabbits. This surgical addition of vascularization to the tissue bed of nerve grafts is used to improve regeneration outcomes.

(2018)This video demonstrates a canine model for inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) regeneration using a biodegradable scaffold and ethanol-induced sympathetic blockade. The procedure involves surgically accessing the cervical sympathetic ganglion and injecting ethanol to induce vasodilation. The resulting...
